Physiology and welfare of marine species

The PHYSIS research group is made up of researchers from the Oceanographic Centres of Murcia, Málaga and Canary Islands with the common objective of studying key physiological aspects of culture marine species. Standing out: (i) the diversification of species and the development of sustainable farming techniques; (ii) the study of nutritional physiology and the development of optimal diets; (iii) improving the health of cultivated species by identifying biomarkers of well-being and reducing the prevalence of infectious diseases including environmental monitoring of marine viruses. Our research includes studies on reproductive behaviour, nutritional requirements and animal welfare, optimization of larval culture protocols, the study of growth, the immune response to pathogens and potential preventive and palliative treatments through the study of physiological processes and cellular and molecular mechanisms that trigger these responses.
