Metabolism and Bioactivity of Phytochemicals (BIOCELL)


Multidisciplinary team with wide scientific experience and complementary capacities to carry out basic and applied research in the study of the health benefits of plant bioactive compounds. The activities of the research group have an integral approach, from the chemical characterization of nutrients and phytochemicals (mainly polyphenols) in foods to the study of their health effects in in vitro assays in cell culture models to uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying their biological activity, carrying on pre-clinical assays in animal models of different pathologies, validating the effect of the intake of foods, food bioactive components or dietary supplements in clinical studies in humans, assessing the bioavailability and metabolism of phytochemicals, and exploring the interindividual variability in the response to the intake of bioactive foods or food components, focusing on Precision Nutrition in the human intervention studies.
