FPU2023- Sepsis in metabolic diseases

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has emerged as a leading global cause of chronic liver disease in the past few decades fueled by the increase in obesity. One quarter of the global population is estimated to have MASLD. Neutrophil infiltration is a frequent histological observation in MASLD and is associated with disease progression. Neutrophils are part of the first line of defense during bacterial infection and they have a number of strategies at their disposal to efficiently deal with pathogens, among them Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). One of the conditions in which NETS release goes from beneficial to detrimental is sepsis. As systemic inflammation, such as in MASH, is associated with high mortality, this calls for new therapeutic strategies but first requires gaining knowledge on the mechanisms of NETs control. Our project aims to provide a response to the unmet clinical need in sepsis in a context of susceptibility such as MASLD.
