Methods in Ecology and Assessment of Living Marine Resources

The evaluation of living marine resources is a necessity for society to guarantee the sustainability of these resources and maximize the social benefit of their exploitation. The evaluation process aims to quantify the consequences of different management alternatives. For this objective, it is necessary to have knowledge of the dynamics of the populations and ecosystems studied and how fishing activity affects these populations. This can be done, preferably, by developing mathematical models that incorporate biological and fisheries information. The development of these techniques requires a multidisciplinary team that includes all elements of the process, from data analysis, to the simulation of the management measure, through the biology of the species, the activity of the fleets, programming, statistics, etc.
