Exploitation of unique aspects of metabolism for the identificationof novel therapeutic agents against parasitic protozoa

Since 1991 the group is a consolidated team interested in the discovery of unique aspects of the metabolism of parasitic protozoa with the aim of exploiting the resulting information in the design of novel therapeutic strategies. We have participated in several multidisciplinary consortia specifically devoted to the discovery of drugs for the treatment of tropical diseases. The IP has coordinated several EU funded projects and has collaborations with pharma industry and clinical groups. Current interests include malaria, leishmaniases, Chagas disease and sleeping sickness. Additionally the group is interested in basic aspects of the biology of protozoa and has performed research in the areas of pyrimidine metabolism, DNA repair and the regulation of the presence of uracil in the genome. The group has both national and international funding and has participated actively in review and evaluation activities. The team has produced 28 articles in the last five years.
