Molecular Infection Biology

In January of 2015 I took possession of my position as Titular Scientist at CNB and in July 2016, the laboratory was equipped and staff trained and functional to work with the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. In our group we explored the cellular organization of S. aureus and its implications in infective processes. We investigate the existence of membrane microdomains in Bacteria, with a different composition of lipids and proteins in the membrane and which are structurally and functionally similar to the lipid rafts of eukaryotic cells. We investigate the processes of organization and assembly of these domains, their biological function and their implication in infective processes, as well as the possibility of generating new strategies against infections based on disruption of bacterial lipid rafts.
