Service description
Conventional method for general, sensitive visualization of proteins separated by gel electrophoresis.
The "MS compatible" methods used in proteomics replace the glutaraldehyde fixative used in classical silver staining methods with acetic acid. Glutaraldehyde binds proteins to the gel increasing the sensitivity of the staining method; however this also reduces the yield of peptides extracted from the gel after in-gel digestion for MS identification. Detailed protocols for MS-compatible staining are available from the facility website.
