ATOMIC MANIPULATION AND SPECTROSCOPY

ATOMIC MANIPULATION AND SPECTROSCOPY

The Group of Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy seeks to understand and control the quantum properties of electrons in low-dimensional materials. Reducing the dimensions of a material to the nanoscale leads to the emergence of novel physics, which can be exploited to design devices with enhanced performance or with new functionalities that can enable future technologies.

Systems Biotechnology

The group's main objectives are the study, comprehension, design, and management of microbiomes and the enzymes they contain in environmental, biotechnological, and biomedical research contexts. In environmental research, the aim is to characterize, understand, and utilize microbial communities inhabiting different ecosystems for biotechnological applications. In biotechnological/enzymology research, the focus is on identifying, designing, and developing new enzymes (both natural and artificial) and applying them in multiple areas.

Applied Biocatalysis Group

The Applied Biocatalysis Group at CSIC investigates the application of enzymes in different fields, such as sustainable chemistry, functional foods, biomedicine and biofuels. For the industrial development of biocatalytic processes, an effective immobilization method is commonly required to allow the reuse of enzymes and/or continuous processing. Examples of our recent projects include the synthesis of prebiotic oligosaccharides by transglycosylation or the enzymatic preparation of acyl- and glycosyl-derivatives of bioactive antioxidants.Further information in http://www.franciscoploulab.eu/

Optimization of biocatalysts and bioprocesses

This research group is a one of recent creation (2009). After working since 1988 in several areas of biocatalysis, under the supervision of Dr Guisan, and a postdoctoral stand in UCL under supervision of Dr Cowan (1993-1996) the leader research has a wide experience in the study of the interactions between biomacromolecules and activated solids, both to purify or immobilize/stabilize these biomacromolecules. Moreover, he has expertise in the chemical and physical modification of these biomacromolecules, both to improve their properties or to improve their immobilization performance.
