REGULATION OF LATERAL ROOT DEVELOPMENT DURING NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES

REGULATION OF LATERAL ROOT DEVELOPMENT DURING NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES

My group has studied root development in response to nutritional deficiencies, salinity or drought stress. We have developed novel devices, D-Root and TGRooZ (patented), to grow plants in vitro with the root system in the dark and to generate soil temperature gradients to study the responses of plant roots to heat, mimicking conditions natural. With these systems we are studying the responses of plants to nutritional deficiencies and high temperatures, two factors that threaten food security.

Biological noise unit

Our group studies the origin and consequences of phenotypic variability. Phenotypic variability is a phenomenon by which genetically identical organisms or cells, in the same environment, behave differently. This phenomenon is very important in pathological situations such as cancer. A consequence of this variability is heterogeneity in the response of tumor cells to therapies.

Applied ecology

Applied ecology

We use ecological studies to advance knowledge required for the sustainable management of natural resources. We work with several study systems, but have a particular interest in the ecology and behavior of mammals and the the ecological effects of climate change in Arctic environments. The research is carried out at different levels of biological organization, from individuals to populations and communities. Our research approach is directly aligned with several of the global objectives of CSIC.

Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Landscape

Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Landscape

We study biodiversity and its effects on ecosystems from the perspective of spatial and landscape ecology, with both theoretical and applied focus. We analyze the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functions across different temporal and spatial scales, considering functional traits, ecological interactions, and landscape dynamics. Our applied research is focused on nature conservation and human well-being in human-disturbed ecosystems.

Polymer Composites

Polymer Composites emerges in 2021 from Polymeric Nanomaterials, an A-rated group: excellent. The new group was formed after a long-term collaboration, of more than 15 years, between two researchers, and was consolidated with the attraction of two "Ramón y Cajal" researchers bringing new lines of work.

Geological Extreme Events and Heritage (GEE&H)

The analysis of extreme geological events and the proposal of mitigation measures to prevent the concomitant hazard effects, especially on the natural and cultural heritage, are addressed from the IGME-CSIC research group on “Geological extreme events and Heritage”, by applying pioneer and innovative methodological approaches, including: geology applied to emergency situations; earthquake geology and archaeo-seismology; geological hazard assessment in volcanic islands; cataloguing and surveying mass movements; flood and paleo-flood hydrology and geomorphology; characterization and

Paleontology of terrestrial and marine ecosystems: responses to biotic and environmental crises during the Phanerozoic

Paleontology of terrestrial and marine ecosystems: responses to biotic and environmental crises during the Phanerozoic

The research focuses on fossils, reconstruction of past environments and diversification/extinction events, and covers practically all the Phanerozoic (from the Cambrian to the Holocene). It stands out for its multidisciplinary nature and the application of up-to date techniques and methodologies in the study of the History of Life on Earth.
