Combustion and Gasification

Research is focuses on the development of clean energy generation processes without CO2 emissions from different fuels, mainly biomass and renewable wastes. Energy or syngas generation through combustion and gasification processes are investigated, emphasizing environmental aspects and process optimization. Advanced decarbonization processes are explored for the combustion of renewable fuels to achieve negative CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement targets. Existing decarbonization processes have a high energy penalty and CO2 capture costs. To reduce these capture costs, the research group is developing advanced processes using oxygen carriers, named Chemical-Looping Combustion (CLC) and Chemical Looping Gasification (CLG). The research group is pioneer in the development of Chemical Looping processes, being nowadays highly relevant at an international level.
