Biogeochemistry and Geomicrobiology

BIOGEO is a CSIC research group dedicated to studying the interactions between living organisms and their environment, with a particular emphasis on how global change and extreme environmental conditions impact ecosystem structure, diversity, functioning, and biogeochemical fluxes. Our mission is to uncover the mechanisms governing biogeochemical processes in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems through a multiscalar approach (from micro to global scales, including the whole-ecosystem level) and a multitemporal perspective (ranging from minutes to millennia), with special focus on long-term ecological changes and ecosystem resilience. We aim to develop mechanistic, predictive models to understand ecosystem responses to global change drivers, including climate warming, eutrophication, biodiversity loss, land-use land-cover change.
