FPU2025 - Biophysics of Cancer Cells Using Atomic Force Microscopy and Digital Holographic Microscopy

The Bionanomechanics Lab invites applications for an FPU - PhD position in a cutting-edge research project at the interface of nanophysics, biophysics, and oncology. This PhD Project objective will be to develop reliable, high-throughput physical technologies to study the biophysical properties of cancer cells. The planned micro- and nanotechnologies will integrate atomic force microscopy, nanomechanical systems, cavity optomechanics, and digital holographic microscopy for the study of cancer cells. The PhD project will train the candidate in the multidisciplinary aspects of this research: instrumentation development (hardware and software), numerical models and finite element simulations to understand cellular mechanobiology, optics, mechanics, and deep learning for data analysis. The work will be carried out in a multidisciplinary environment under the supervision of experts in nanotechnology, nanofabrication, engineering, and biology. The project involves experimental and theoretical skills, instrumentation design, and optomechanical and biological characterization. Mentor CV: Javier Tamayo, 15 patents, over 100 articles published in indexed journals, with more than 9600 citations, h-index 49. He has successfully proposed and developed disruptive concepts at the boundary between physics and biology, such as the identification of biophysical markers for cancer mechanobiology and for the detection of pathogenic organisms.
