Organic Matter in Soils ans Sediments (MOSS)

The MOSS group (IRNAS-CSIC) is an international reference in the study of organic matter in natural and anthropogenic systems. Its research integrates organic geochemistry, soil biogeochemistry, and microbial ecology to understand the processes controlling carbon stability, nitrogen dynamics, and soil fertility. Its main research lines focus on: i) the valorization of organic residues, including the production of biochar and advanced fertilizers; ii) the restoration of degraded soils; iii) the study of molecular markers in extreme environments and natural archives; and iv) the detection of microplastics in natural samples. The group combines fundamental and applied research, participates in and leads several national and international projects, and collaborates with public administrations and industry. It operates advanced analytical instrumentation and has extensive experience in the molecular and isotopic characterization of complex matrices (soils, sediments, and biologic)
