Physiology and welfare of marine species

The PHYSIS research group is made up of researchers from the Oceanographic Centres of Murcia, Málaga and Canary Islands with the common objective of studying key physiological aspects of cultured and wild marine species, including: (i) the diversification of species and the development of sustainable farming techniques; (ii) the study of nutritional physiology and the development of optimal diets; (iii) improving the health of cultivated species by identifying biomarkers of well-being and reducing the prevalence of infectious diseases; (iv) surveillance, immunity, and control of viruses in marine fauna and zoonotic risks. Our research includes studies on reproductive behaviour, growth studies, genomics, nutritional requirements and animal welfare, optimization of larval culture protocols, and deepening the knowledge of physiological, cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in response to challenges like pathogens and climate change.
