PHYTOCHEMICALS, MOLECULAR MECHANISMS AND HEALTH (PHYTOBIOMOL)

The research activity of the group focusses on the study of the molecular action of dietary phyochemicals, mainly phenolic compounds and their metabolites, and their potential effect on health and the prevention of highly prevalent chronic diseases related to oxidative stress and inflammation. The group is also interested in investigating the beneficial effects of these natural compounds on gut microbiome and their potential impact on the metabolome.

Materials and products for biomedicine and the environment (ECOBIOMED)

Materials and products for biomedicine and the environment (ECOBIOMED)

The research group is focused on the synthesis of nanoparticulated materials to be applied in antimicrobial therapy, pain management and osteoarthritis. Primary research directions are also focused on designing on-demand drug delivery systems. The group is interested in the development of new antimicrobial nanomaterials and devices with no cytotoxic effects on human cells, and with demonstrated superior efficiency than conventional strategies.

Digital technologies, sensory analysis, meat and derivatives (DIGISEN)

DIGISEN is a research group born with the purpose of implementing emerging digital technologies in the field of food research. These technologies will be primarily used as a support tool for sensory and consumer analysis techniques in the development of more sustainable and healthier meat and derivative products, but with the idea of also using them in other areas (such as characterization or safety) and products (not only meat and derivatives). Within these digital technologies are Industry 4.0 technologies such as mixed reality, biometric devices, or complex data analysis.

Neural Engineering Lab

Neural Engineering Lab

Our team applies engineering techniques to investigate the function and manipulate the central and peripheral nervous system. Research performed in our lab focus on functional recovery and mobility after neurological injuries using neuromodulation approaches. We design breakthrough technology-based interventions to promote neurorecovery through neural interfaces. These interfaces allow us to record neural activity and stimulate the nervous system to modulate and strengthen neural pathways. Currently, the main line of research carried out in our lab is Neuroprosthetics for tremor reduction.

RAS SIGNALING AND LUNG CANCER

RAS SIGNALING AND LUNG CANCER

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths both in Spain and worldwide. In addition, the 5-year-survival rate of less than 20Ͽas barely improved over the last decades. Approximately one quarter of these tumors are driven by mutations in KRAS, but so far no selective therapeutic strategy has been approved for these patients. Although inhibitors against a subset of KRAS oncoproteins have shown promising results in early phase trials, the majority of KRAS-mutant tumors will not benefit from these inhibitors. Moreover, resistance to these targeted therapies is a major concern.

Cell Compartmentalization, Homeostasis and Inflammation

The long-term interest of our lab is to contribute to the better understanding of (1) how the architecture and function of specific cell compartments is regulated, and how their integrity is ensured; (2) how these regulatory mechanisms are integrated with signalling networks controlling inflammation and innate immunity, and (3) how these principles modulate tissue repair and fibrosis, innate defence against pathogens, or aging-associated decline.
