Activity focused on the synthesis, processing, mechanical and microestructural chracterization, tayloring and modeling of nanoestructured ceramic materials of high preformance for structural applications at severe environments. The group develops catalytic systems for production and purification of hydrogen from renewable sources, addressing all the steps necessary for its complete development. For the synthesis of these, soft chemistry methods are used to control the most relevant parameters in this respect: particle size, compositional homogeneity, surface morphology. On the other hand, systems are characterized using advanced methods with the highest possible resolution at spatial and / or temporal levels, paying particular attention to techniques that allow such characterization under operating conditions.

The Systems Biotechnology Group at CSIC addresses biotechnological challenges using experimental, bioinformatic, and computational tools. The Applied Biocatalysis Group at CSIC investigates the application of enzymes in different fields, such as sustainable chemistry, functional foods, biomedicine and biofuels.For the industrial development of biocatalytic processes, an effective immobilization method is commonly required to allow the reuse of enzymes and/or continuous processing. Examples of our recent projects include the synthesis of prebiotic oligosaccharides by transglycosylation or the enzymatic preparation of acyl- and glycosyl-derivatives of bioactive antioxidants.Further information in http://www.franciscoploulab.eu/

The EQS Group develop it research activity in energy, chemical and applied chemistry fields, more specifically in synthesis and structure of heterogeneous and organometallic catalysts, chemical and energy processes, and optimization and engineering of catalytic systems. Our research and development labor is focused in three broad fields: energy, new clean catalytic processes and environmental catalytic technologies.

ECE group is expertise in Catalytic Technologies, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Catalysis, where the main research lines of this group are framed by different projects based on the study and development of environmental catalytic processes. In waste water treatments is focused on the study and development of heterogeneous catalytic approaches for advanced oxidation process (AOPs). The AOPs studied are Catalytic Wet Peroxide Oxidation (CWPO) or Heterogeneous-Fenton, and heterogeneous photocatalysis and solar light.

This research group is a one of recent creation (2009). After working since 1988 in several areas of biocatalysis, under the supervision of Dr Guisan, and a postdoctoral stand in UCL under supervision of Dr Cowan (1993-1996) the leader research has a wide experience in the study of the interactions between biomacromolecules and activated solids, both to purify or immobilize/stabilize these biomacromolecules. Moreover, he has expertise in the chemical and physical modification of these biomacromolecules, both to improve their properties or to improve their immobilization performance.

The main scientific activity of the Group focuses on sustainable chemistry, centered in the synthesis, characterization and applications of zeolite and nanoporous materials as catalysts in the production of fuels with low carbon footprint and high-added value chemicals, and the improvement of conventional energy and chemicals production processes, involving refining and petrochemistry, engineered for low environmental impact and optimizing natural resources.

Process Engineering and Control Group focuses its activity on laboratory scale reactors and micro-scale pilot plants development for research purposes. One of our main work lines is the design of new measurement and control devices for improving the operability and performance of these equipments. Operation scale is a distinctive criterion in the design of our reactors and pilot plants, therefore several devices and instruments have been developed specifically for proper working at micro-scale.
