PETROLOGY APPLIED TO HERITAGE CONSERVATION

The research carried out within the framework of this line focuses on the study of the processes involved in the formation of minerals, on the phenomena that take place during the alteration of minerals and stone materials, and on the development of strategies that can be used to protect and repair these materials. These studies require the use of different analysis and characterisation techniques (mineralogical, geochemical, petrological and petrophysical), which provide information at different scales, from the nanoscopic to the macroscopic. A basic aspect associated with the definition of the term Geomaterial is that it is susceptible of having an application, which can involve diverse disciplines, from civil engineering and heritage conservation to materials science.
