Inhibitory neuronal circuits

The laboratory investigates the impact of biological sex in brain function. In particular, we address how sex hormones and sex chromosomes shape the function of the hippocapus, a brain region involved in memory and spatial navigation. Our final aim is to elucidate how the constantly changing sex hormone milieu may impact the neuronal function throughout life span, from the organisational effects in early hippocampal development to activational effects on puberty, adult and the aging brain. Our research is important to understand sex-specific effects of in brain function, improve sex-hormone based therapies, gain insights into pathological mechanisms of sex-biased mental diseases and find strategies to buffer combined effects of reproductive senescence and aging on brain function.
