Geoheritage & Geodiversity

Geological heritage, stone heritage and geodiversity are lines of research developed at the IGME-CSIC since the 1970s. This research group has been one of the international pioneers in this discipline, coordinating the Spanish Inventory of Sites of Geological Interest (IELIG) and co-leading the IGCP-731 IUGS-Geological Heritage Sites (2021-2023) project. Consolidated experience in legislation and management of movable geological heritage, methodological developments on inventories, impact of global and climate change and geoconservation (monitoring and indicators of the state of conservation in built stone heritage, geodiversity and geoheritage), degradation and durability of stone material make the GEO-HERITAGE group representatives in national and international bodies and committees in these matters. Another line is the contribution as Members of the Spanish National Committee of UNESCO Global Geoparks.
