Aquifer Research and Computational Hydrology (ARCHY)

This research group encompasses a broad spectrum of hydrogeological and modeling disciplines. Key areas of focus include the development of conceptual models for the functioning of aquifers in hard-rock and volcanic settings, as well as in detrital and karst systems; the hydrogeological, hydrogeochemical, and isotopic characterization of mountain and polar aquifers; hillside aquifers and wetlands associated with groundwater; the assessment of recharge processes and groundwater storage; and investigations into river–aquifer interactions, managed aquifer recharge, and the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions for water management. To advance these research objectives, we employ, develop, and refine mathematical tools in addition to classical hydrogeological techniques. These tools include numerical models based on physical and/or chemical processes, spatiotemporal statistical models, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches, particularly Machine Learning (ML) algorithms
