PIF2025 - Deterministic growth of graphene nanoribbons and their integration into transistor-like nanoelectronic devices - (PID2024-157972OB-C21)

Graphene, the first isolated 2D material, could enable the next-generation of nanoelectronic devices if it were reliably scaled into 1D-like forms - graphene nanoribbons (GNRs)- and integrated into devices. However, this technology remains elusive. The GTRONICS project aims to develop innovative strategies for the deterministic growth of GNRs with controlled structure, morphology, and positioning, as well as micro- and nanofabrication technologies (MNTs) to enable their integration into transistor-like devices and circuits. The project involves collaboration with the University of Valladolid and the University of Hamburg. The candidate’s work will be experimental, carried out in advanced laboratories such as IMB-CNM’s cleanroom—the largest in Spain—and through interaction with collaborators. Planned activities include: + Deterministic growth of GNRs, including the engineering of substrates, exploring synthesis conditions, and structural characterization using SEM, AFM, and Raman spectroscopy. + Development of MNTs for GNR-based devices, including process optimization, layout design, and electrical characterization of test structures and circuits. + Participation in national and international collaborations, scientific dissemination, and outreach activities.
