Marine Resources and Biodiversity in Central-East Atlantic (MARBIA)

The main research lines focus on the assessment of marine living resources of interest to the Spanish fleet operating in the central–eastern Atlantic, as well as on obtaining the biological and biogeographical parameters of commercially important species in the region (West Africa and the Canary Islands). We employ biological–fisheries data analysis and modelling techniques for stock assessment/identification and for developing recommendations aimed at sustainable management. Scientific surveys, together with onboard sampling, port sampling, and laboratory analyses, provide high-quality information for taxonomic and bioecological studies of the main faunal groups in the area. Another prominent research line is dedicated to age and growth analysis in calcified structures of cephalopods (CSIC service). In the Canary Islands region, the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive is implemented.
