PIF2025 - Supramolecular Chemical Biology through receptors design and dynamic covalent systems (SupraChembio) - (PID2024-162093NB-I00)

The molecular recognition of biorelevant species is a hot topic in chemical research that comprises different subdisciplines like supramolecular chemistry and chemical biology. Despite important advances in the last years, there are still challenges that would require a multidisciplinary approach. An important issue is the development of non-natural receptors and ligands able to display strong and selective binding in highly competitive biological media. Thus, in this proposal we aim to prepare and study new synthetic molecules able to selectively bind different biomolecules, ranging from peptides, DNA sequences or glycosaminoglycans. To reach this goal, we will exploit our experience in dynamic covalent chemistry for the efficient preparation of different receptors and ligands. The expected impact of SupraBioChem proposal at short and long terms is multiple. On one hand, our results will impact on the methodologies for preparation of different receptors and ligands related to supramolecular chemistry. Moreover, the molecular recognition studies will contribute to a better understanding of binding processes in aqueous media. On the other hand, the potential biomedical applications of the new molecules as molecular probes or hits can be envisioned, admittedly at a longer term that could easily overcome the duration of this project.
