PIF2025 - GENESIS: Genome Evolution with Global Epistasis - (PID2024-162835NA-I00)
Which specific sequence of mutations will turn a harmless microbe into a pathogen, a parasite into a drug-resistant strain, or a healthy cell into a cancer cell? Finding answers to these questions could help us stay ahead of antibiotic resistance, viral outbreaks, and cancer progression.
This project will study how mathematical models can be used to forecast the pace and direction of evolution. We will simulate evolution computationally and we will also we evolve bacteria in the lab — watching evolution unfold in real time.
