Service description
The thermal diffusivity measurements are made with a thermaflash 2200 equipment, Holometrix, Inc., Thematest Division, Cambridge, MA. USA, based on the laser pulse method.
In this method, one of the faces of the sample is heated homogeneously by striking a laser pulse (a neodymium glass laser emitting at 1060 nm, with a pulse power of 15 Joules), the heat absorbed, It is transmitted through the sample and produces an increase in temperature on the opposite side. This increase is collected as a function of time with an infrared detector (indium antimonide, InSb) located in the heat transmission line and cooled by liquid nitrogen.
In the test chamber, both the tubular furnace and the sample holder are made of tantalum. During the tests, the interior of the chamber is kept in an inert atmosphere with Argon.
The equipment allows to measure the thermal diffusivity (¿) of a material with an accuracy of 5% according to the ASTM E 1461-92 and ISO/DIS 18755.
