Broad-spectrum antivirals against coronavirus and other enveloped virus

New antivirals, synthesized using green chemistry and administered by inhalation, capable of combating respiratory diseases and enveloped viruses.

Market need
The antiviral market is one of the largest within the pharmaceutical sector; it represents more than 15% of global pharmaceutical sales, even though near only 80 antivirals have been approved and these act on just 10 of the 220 relevant viruses. Viral diseases are responsible for 33% of all deaths caused by infectious diseases, amounting to roughly 52 million deaths per year.
Antivirals for COVID‑19/SARS‑CoV‑2 are expected to grow at around 3.8% annually through 2031, and new drugs targeting coronavirus, influenza, RSV, and other enveloped viruses have a global market potential estimated between 60 and 140 billion dollars.

Proposed solution
Broad‑spectrum antivirals, useful for treating viral infections as such and not merely alleviating associated symptoms, effective against different enveloped respiratory viruses. They are intended to replace or reduce the dose of anti‑inflammatory drugs commonly administered for that purpose, but which are known to cause side effects, such as corticosteroids. These compounds are easy to synthesize using green chemistry and are administered intranasally by inhalation, since they are designed for respiratory viruses and many compounds of this type are rapidly degraded if given orally or intravenously. So, the antivirals reaches the site of infection directly, arriving at the bronchi, bronchioles, and finally the alveoli.
