Organic Geochemistry Lab

The Organic Geochemistry Lab investigates the elemental composition, optical properties, molecular structure and reactivity of dissolved organic matter in coastal and oceanic marine systems worldwide, in a planet under growing anthropogenic pressure. Geographically, we are particularly interested on the Iberian coastal upwelling and in the Atlantic Ocean. We have recently incorporated the study of the mechanisms of digestion of organic matter and fertilization of coastal waters that have been unexplored, such as continental groundwater discharge to the coast, subterranean estuaries and, in general, marine permeable sediments. Furthermore, our studies in the Iberian upwelling have extended to the assessment of the provision and regulation ecosystem services provided by the large coastal embayments of the Galician coast, collectively known as “rías”, as well as the evaluation of the climate risks that could affect the sustainability of these services in the forthcoming
