Energy metabolism and drug development

Energy metabolism is essential for the maintenance of cellular functions, thus, a drug target to treat a variety of pathologies. We investigate new mitochondrial inhibitors, membrane active peptides and disruptors of the signal transduction pathways involved in the regulation of the energy metabolism to fight, for example, against infection by the human protozoan parasite Leishmania or to sensitize cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents. The pivotal role of the energy metabolism in all living organisms and its modification under a variety of pathologies has become an appealing target for the development of new therapeutic approaches. Although our expertise in cellular bioenergetics has allowed us to address different biological and pathological systems, with fruitful collaborations with other research groups, our main goal is the development of new strategies to treat leishmaniasis. .
