FPU2023-Use of self-supported enzymes for biotechnological applications and biosensing

The implementation of enzymatic cascades to replace industrial chemical processes is one of the desired strategies towards greener and more sustainable synthetic processes since it reduces the consumption of chemicals and, therefore, also to reduce the generation of pollutants, reducing the loss of time and costs. But from the industrial point of view, the stability of biocatalysts is mandatory to achieve processes economically profitable. In this sense, enzymes-immobilization, crystals or aggregates, is a good strategy to enhance their stability and usability, since they are in solid state. In this PhD project the student will transfer an new multienzymatic cascade for the production of relevant amino acids to a system based on self-supported enzymes loaded into a modular microfluidic system. During this period the student will cloned, express, purified and crystallized the target enzymes. Therefore his/her formation will include learning a variety of techniques and methods to complete the training in crystallography, biophysics and protein biotechnology. The student will enroll in the UGR Doctoral Program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology offering a very wide catalogue of training activities, including participation in seminars, workshops, conferences, and specialized courses.
