Emergence of quantum phases in novel materials 2023 (VII ed)

The VII Edition of the Course "Emergence of Quantum Phases in Novel Materials" will take place during the week September, 11-15 2023 at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) in an in-person format.
The goal of the course is to give an overview of the effect of interactions and topology in materials and low dimensional systems. The course was previously offered in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021. The present edition will include the most recent developments in the field. In each of these topics we will emphasize the essential concepts and discuss experimental results in real materials and devices. The course is addressed to both experimentalists and theorists with different degrees of experience (Master students, Phd candidates, postdocs, permanent staff). The lectures will be given in English.
In the course we will justify the success of band theory (Fermi liquid theory) and describe the formation of local moments due to interactions (Mott physics and Hund metals) The different behavior of localized and itinerant electrons as well as their interplay will be addressed when discussing the Kondo efect, magnetism, heavy fermion and superconducting states. We will give an introduction to the topological phases of matter recently discovered: topological insulators, Weyl semimetals and topological superconductivity and to non-equilibrium physics.
