PIF2025 - Pathobiont-derived amyloids: linking intestinal dysbiosis to Parkinson's disease - (PID2024-156966OB-I00)
PATHOAMYL aims to advance our understanding of the processes through which pathobionts arising from a dysbiotic microbiota contribute to the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular focus on Parkinson’s disease. Specifically, the project proposes that amyloids produced by these pathobionts act as pathoadaptive factors. This amyloid burden may exert collateral effects on the gut, creating an environment that favors the development of Parkinson’s disease. The scientific program supports this goal by training the student in: i) the assessment of metagenomic and proteomic analyses; ii) the manipulation of microbiota and pathobionts in BSL2; iii) cellular and animal experimentation; and iv) the assessment of structural and dynamics of amyloidogenesis. The project is both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, supported by strong national and international collaborations, providing an excellent framework for PhD research training. We seek a candidate with a strong scientific interest and vocation, holding a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related fields. Experience in microbiota manipulation, molecular biology techniques and multiomics biology will be highly valued. The candidate must demonstrate a strong ability to learn and work independently in developing the project, as well as a commitment to the careful execution of experiments.
