Functional interactions between tetraspanins and cell adhesion molecules

Functional interactions between tetraspanins and cell adhesion molecules

Our group has demonstrated experience in the functional characterization of surface proteins on tumour, leukocytic and endothelial cells, that have implication in the processes of adhesion, migration, angiogenesis and tumoral dissemination.

Immunity and Viromics

Immunity and Viromics

We are interested in understanding how viruses evade the host immune response. We are characterizing herpesvirus and poxvirus proteins that interact with interferons, cytokines or chemokines, and modulate their activity. The contribution of viral cytokine receptors to pathogenesis is being addressed in mouse models of infection.

Redox signaling in plants

Redox signaling in plants

Our group studies the involvement of thioredoxins (Trxs) and thioredoxin reductases (NTRs) in mechanisms of redox regulation in plants, focusing on the function of NTRC, an enzyme first described by our group (Serrato et al. (2004) J. Biol. Chem. 279:43821-43827). Recently, we have proposed a novel model for chloroplast redox regulation according to which, the reductive activation of biosynthetic enzymes in this organelle depends of the redox state of 2-Cys peroxiredoxin, an enzyme that reduces hydrogen peroxide to water (Pérez-Ruiz et al. (2017) PNAS 114:12069-12074).

Metabolism and signaling by sulfide and cyanide

Metabolism and signaling by sulfide and cyanide

The research of the group has focused from its beginning on the metabolism of sulfur in plants. Our main focus is the study of cysteine biosynthesis and metabolism and recently signaling by molecules related to cysteine. We have been pioneers in establishing a change of concept, so that these molecules are involved in the signaling pathways that regulate essential processes in the plant, such as the responses to both abiotic and biotic adverse conditions, autophagy and the root hair development.

Radiation Detectors

Radiation Detectors

The Radiation Detectors Group (RDG) started its activity in 1996 participating in the CERN ATLAS Inner Detector Collaboration with the aim of developing silicon radiation sensors for the tracker system and studying the radiations effects on the devices. In the last 20 years, RDG has been participating in the development/upgrade of the instrumentation of some of the most important high-energy physics experiments (ATLAS, AFP, TOTEM, CT-PPS, CMS).

Power Devices and Systems

Power Devices and Systems

The Power Devices and Systems Group of IMB-CNM was established in 1985, has developed his research continuously since then and currently consists of 20 people. Its activity focuses on the design, fabrication, characterization and integration of power semiconductor devices, optimized for developing reliable and energy efficient converters and electronic systems, operating even in harsh environments (high temperature, radioactive environments, etc.).

Marine Geosciences

Marine Geosciences

The Geomarine Sciences group realizes multidisciplinary studies on continental margins and marine basins, analyzing processes that interplay in the dynamics of the Earth System and in its relationship with Global Change. It integrates research on Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry and Biogeochemistry in marine environments and includes offshore-onshore correlations. Research topics on basic science aim the study of relationships between the deep processes which affect the lithosphere and the external processes which make conditional the morphology, environment and climate on the Earth surface.

LASER PROCESSING GROUP (LPG)

LASER PROCESSING GROUP (LPG)

The activity of the Laser Processing Group (LPG) focuses on the study of both fundamental and applied aspects of laser-matter interaction aiming at discovering, understanding and controlling laser-matter interaction phenomena down to the nanometer (spatial) and femtosecond (temporal) scales. As a result we perform internationally relevant research in the fields of photonics, nanotechnology and ultrafast science.

Biological Glycochemistry Group

Biological Glycochemistry Group

The scientific activity of the research group is mainly devoted to the synthesis and selective transformations of carbohydrates, with the aim of obtaining molecules with utility in biological studies and with medical applications. We study selective transformations using chemical methods and biocatalysis with commercially available enzymes or obtained by the research team. The multidisciplinary character of the group is reinforced by collaborations with other groups from complementary disciplines and backgrounds.
