Tuberculosis Genomics Unit

At the Tuberculosis Genomics Unit (TGU) we combine evolutionary, epidemiological, functional and genomic analyses to understand the biology pathogens of global health importance. We very much focis on the causative agents of human tuberculosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium africanum. Furthermore, we are also moving towards integrated host-pathogen “omics” approaches. Our final aim is to find new ways to fight the disease. In addition we work in other infectious diseases that impact both developed and developing countries including Legionellosis, Helicobacteriosis and non-tuberculosis mycobacterial diseases. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic we have led the Spanish efforts on genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 what has allowed us to understand the epidemiological dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 during the different waves and the role of SARS-CoV-2 variants.
