Sustainable Agrobiotechnology


It is comprised of three lines that complement each other. Research work is being carried out on plant nutrition and soil fertility, studying sustainable systems in crops of economic interest to the Canary Islands. Likewise, these systems would serve for the use of by-products of vegetable and animal origin that nowadays its management constitutes an environmental problem. Another of the lines carries out studies on the use of chemical activators of the natural defences of plants as a sustainable alternative to the use of pesticides. One of these defence activators, a water-soluble derivative of vitamin K3 (MSB), has been the subject of 7 patents for invention and transfer to industry, based on MSB. The Biotechnology line of macromolecules uses recombinant DNA technology and synthetic biology for the production of biopharmaceuticals and other macromolecules of therapeutic, cosmetic, agro-food and/or phytosanitary interest.
