Nucleosides and analogues as a source of bioactive molecules

The research group, founded in 1989, is composed by permanent staff with complementary profiles of expertise and know-how, and a variable number of postdoctoral and PhD students. Training of personnel at different stages (undergraduates or postdocs) is one of the pillars of the group along with the excellence of our national and international collaborators. The group performs a highly innovative cutting-edge research in the Medicinal Chemistry field. The group works in different therapeutic fields including, (re)emerging viral diseases (i.e. AIDS), parasitic diseases or bacterial and chemotherapy of cancer, each of them of important sanitary, social or economic impact. The group also develops the cross-cutting research lines: molecular modeling, virtual screening and prodrugs design. Our work in the field of AIDS was rewarded in 2001 with the highly competitive and prestigious DESCARTES PRIZE for Scientific and Technological Excellence through European collaborative research.
