Carbonization and Environment


This research group was formed out of the carbonization group which carried out research into the optimization of coal blends for the production of coke for the iron and steel industry and marked by strong relationships with the industry since its beginning. As a result of the progressive orientation given over the years to the traditional line, current research is focused to reducing the environmental impact (waste recycling, fossil-CO2 mitigation, effluent treatments) through the diversification of raw materials in cokemaking in order to safeguarding good-quality coals as potential solutions for the short-medium term. The available infrastructure includes specific instrumentation for the evaluation of raw materials and lab-scale products which is complemented by semipilot coking facilities and specific quality tests used by the industry.
