He earned his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Madrid in 1977. His areas of expertise include: Microelectronics, Si technology, integrated circuits, CMOS circuits, micro- and nano-electronic technologies, microsystems, microsensors, semiconductor devices and MCM (Microchip modules). He has written nearly a hundred publications and holds several patents.

He has been linked to the CSIC since 1975 both as a research staff member, and as a doctor connected to the National Microelectronics Centre, of which he was scientific director, and its Barcelona Institute, where he was Deputy Director. In 1989 he took the Chair of Electronics at the Barcelona Autonomous University.

He has participated in the preparation of various Sector Research Plans related to electronics and was a member of scientific councils of foreign institutions in his specialist field.

He has held various scientific management positions in the CSIC associated with the CNM and the Vice Presidency for Scientific and Technical Research (1996-2003).

He was Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee on the spill from the oil tanker "Prestige" (December 2002 to February 2003).

He is a member of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics and Chemistry (1978) and academician of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences of Barcelona (2001), Corresponding Member of the San Dionisio Royal Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters in Jeréz (2003) and the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Cadiz (2005).

He holds the CSIC bronze (2001) and silver (2004) medals, and the Encomienda de número of the Order of Civil Merit (2002).
